Caring for your kandura
A practical routine for washing, drying, pressing and storing your garment, led by its own care instructions.
In this guide
Read the label before the first wash
Check the fibre composition and the washing, drying and ironing symbols for your actual garment. Similar-looking white fabrics may need different treatment. If a label is missing or unclear, ask the branch before washing. There is no single temperature or detergent suitable for every kandura. A wool garment, for example, should only be machine-washed when its care instructions allow it.
Prepare the garment carefully
Empty pockets, check cuffs and the neckline, and separate the garment from items that may transfer colour. Follow the instructions for detachable tassels or accessories instead of assuming they can go into the same wash. Treat marks using a method suitable for the fabric and test any permitted treatment on a hidden area. Avoid mixing cleaning chemicals or applying bleach unless the care instructions specifically allow it.
Wash and dry as instructed
Use the permitted cycle, temperature and laundry product; more heat or more detergent is not automatically better. Follow the drying symbol rather than choosing a tumble-dryer setting by habit. Once clean, reshape the garment gently if appropriate and dry it in the way specified on its label. If it needs professional cleaning, point out stains and describe any previous treatment to the cleaner.
Press with the fabric in mind
Set the iron according to the care label, including whether steam is allowed. Test a discreet area first and use a pressing cloth when appropriate. Take extra care around decorative work, buttons and attached details. Do not use the same high setting for every white garment. Let the fabric cool before putting it away so that the finished shape is not immediately crushed.
Store it ready for the next wear
- Put the garment away clean and fully dry.
- Use a suitable hanger or fold it without forcing sharp creases into decorative areas.
- Leave space around the garment rather than compressing it tightly.
- Check tassels and fastenings before the next wear.
- Ask the branch about repairs or a change in fit rather than attempting an untested treatment.
